Northwood Town Centre Improvements – Public Consultation.
As you will be aware from the NRA February
newsletter, our council has £200,000 to spend on
improving Northwood town centre.
At very short notice, the London Borough of Hillingdon has organised
a small exhibition in Oaklands Gate Library to demonstrate some of
their proposals for spending the £200,000
All residents of Northwood should have received a leaflet giving
details of the exhibition, but we realise many have not.
The exhibition is running from 19th to 29th February in Oaklands
Gate library. On Tuesday 26th February there will be a council
officer in attendance from 10am to 7pm.
Do go along to see the exhibition if you can, complete the
questionnaire in the leaflet or online at
www.hillingdon.gov.uk/consultation, then come to the
NRA AGM on
Tuesday 18th March to hear Cllr Scott Seaman-Digby’s
presentation on the subject.

PRESS RELEASE
This press release was issued on Friday, 12 October 2007.
Northwood Residents’ Association welcomes investment in Northwood
Northwood Residents’ Association is delighted at the announcement
by Hillingdon Council on 8 October 2007 that the Council had agreed
£200,000 of special funds to be spent on ‘the street scene and
infrastructure of the ward’. The Association understands that these
funds are additional to the routine spending on care and maintenance
of the town centre.
Colin Harris, Chairman of NRA, said, “We are very happy that the
Council has endorsed the view taken by Northwood Residents’
Association that Northwood needs a broad-based strategic plan to
re-invigorate the town centre. The town centre has been dying slowly
for a decade, and it is at risk now of becoming a drive-through to
schools and to other shopping areas. Northwood needs much more than
a face-lift and we think the Council’s announcement provides the
opportunity to re establish Northwood as a vibrant and preferred
destination for shopping, business and leisure. Whilst we have few
details as yet, we are heartened that most of the ideas so far
suggested by the Council are consistent with our Northwood
Improvement Plan that we consulted upon and issued in Spring 2006.
We look forward to playing a full part in the consultation on
development of the Council initiative.”

Street Champion for Northwood, Harefield or Ickenham at the Park
Lane Village Centre, (next to Harefield library), Park Lane,
Harefield on Monday 15th October at 7.30pm.

of a Re-Use bank where residents can take unwanted household items

a 'scrap store' - at the New Years Green Lane Civic Amenity site in
Harefield. Items suitable for re-use include:
- Paints - full or half tins
- Re-usable DIY materials - windows, doors, sinks, wallpapers,
paint brushes, fixtures, fittings, plumbing materials
- Hand tools
- Chinaware and other crockery - cups, saucers, plates, mugs,
serving dishes
- Kitchen items - cutlery, pots, pans, utensils
- Furniture - chairs, sofas, beds, stools, tables
- Soft furnishing - rugs, curtains, cushions, bedding
- Garden items - gardening equipment, furniture, ornaments,
tools
- Children's toys and games
- Bicycles - children and adult sizes
- Sports equipment - rackets, footballs, bats
- Musical instruments
- Mobile phones
- Books, Music CDs, Videos, DVDs
- Collectables, Memorabilia
Residents are invited to sort out their unwanted goods and take
them up to the Re-Use bank in Harefield
(map with directions). The site is open 7 days a week from
8:00am - 4:00pm. Opening hours are extended to 6:00pm during British
Summer Time.
Whilst you are there why not take the opportunity to browse
through the items already delivered for re-use and help yourself to
anything you like. However, please note that as this is a new
initiative the bank may be rather empty to start with. Residents
wishing to use the bank should park their cars in the main recycling
area. Site staff will be on hand to answer any queries.

Streets Ahead comes to Northwood Hills
You may have read about the Streets Ahead programme in the
current edition of Hillingdon People. This is a scheme which is led
by Hillingdon council in partnership with the Metropolitan Police,
Safer Neighbourhood Teams, London Fire Brigade, Hillingdon Homes,
DVLA, Probation Service, Department of Work & Pensions and others.
There will be a Streets Ahead initiative in a different ward each
month for a year. The nearest one to Northwood will be at Northwood
Hills on Thursday 28th June.
This will be a day of action focussing on Northwood Hills. For
example
• the council’s Public Lighting team will be doing a survey on the
night of Monday 25th in readiness to put right any lighting problems
on the 28th
• The Safer Neighbourhood Team will be on hand with the mobile CCTV
van and the Crime Prevention bus
• The Fire Brigade will be bringing along a fire engine and their
members will be on hand to give advice on fire prevention
• Council workers will be cleaning gulleys in selected roads
• The Educational Welfare team will be performing a truancy sweep
• The DVLA will be doing checks in the area
• There will be a Community Market Place in Fairfied Evangelical
Church hall where local voluntary groups will be taking the
opportunity to set up display stands to publicise their activities.
This will be a good opportunity for residents to meet people from
the participating authorities as well as members of local
organisations at the Market Place.

Mount Vernon Cancer Centre
The proposed move of the Mount
Vernon Cancer Centre to a new hospital in Hatfield is not going to happen. The
fight is now on to retain cancer services at Mount Vernon Hospital. There has
already been considerable investment on the site, e.g. £20 million for a new
Radiotherapy Centre and 9 lineac accelerators.
The alternative to retaining services locally could be removal of the Centre to
central London. We have an excellent centre on our doorstep and it is needed to
treat patients from a large catchment area.
Nick Hurd MP has set up a website to support the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre. The
project is fully supported by Community Voice, 3 local MPs and many Harrow and
Hillingdon councillors.
You are asked to add YOUR support on the first page of the website, then ask
friends and relatives to do the same. Numbers count, and we need thousands of
supporters! Please go to
www.supportmountvernon.com and give your support.
Whilst at your computer, you might also like to look at the new (and developing)
Community Voice website:
www.communityvoicehealth.org.uk
It is hoped that the Mount Vernon Treatment Centre will be functioning before
long. In addition, it is anticipated that a considerable amount of elective
surgery will be directed to Mount Vernon from Hillingdon Hospital.

Business Membership of the NRA
We are delighted to report that recruitment of Business Members of
the Association has started well. Business Members are important because
they provide much of the daily life and character in the town centre.
The Association will support the collective voice of local businesses
and organisations to ensure that their needs and expectations of
Northwood are met as far as possible.
We expect that by the new year we will have a Business Members
Sub-Committee with a chairperson who leads them and represents them on
the Executive committee.
If you are a business that hasn’t joined yet, please do so soon using
our Application Form. Not
only will you get to meet and share ideas with other local businesses,
but also your membership will enhance your reputation in the community.
We would ask our resident members to encourage the businesses they use
to join the Association, and to support our business members with their
custom – look out for the NRA Business Member sign in business windows.

Recycle printer cartridges
Residents in the London Borough of Hillingdon are asked to help raise
funds for patient care at Michael Sobell House, the hospice and
palliative care centre based at Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood,
Middlesex by donating their used laser printer/fax and inkjet cartridges
for recycling. A similar appeal for unwanted mobile phones is attracting
support from and residents and organisations within the Borough.
The hospice is extremely dependent on fundraising and voluntary
donations to continue its patient care-we need to raise one million
pounds in 2006 to continue patient care. The hospice is financially
supported by The Friends of Michael Sobell House (The Friends), a
Registered Charity (No 1079638).
Some facts about printer cartridges are:-
* Each discarded empty laser printer cartridge adds approximately three
pounds of waste to our landfill.
* More than 30 million inkjet cartridges are dumped each year in the UK
(1800 tonnes) - the same weight as 18 Blue Whales.
* Industry analysts estimate a spent cartridge can be reused or
remanufactured between 3 to 7 times - every cartridge remanufactured is
one fewer going directly to landfill.
For a supply of recycling mailing bags or to arrange the setting up of a
collection point please contact the Friends of Michael Sobell House
using the dedicated email address
recycling@michaelsobellhouse.co.uk
Do you have a link with a local community group or business/employer
which could support the campaign by becoming a collection point for used
cartridges? Please let us know by contacting either Steve Grudgings,
Fundraising Manager on 01923 844606 or Geraint Hughes, Corporate and
Trusts Fundraising Manager on 01923 844550.
The inkjet cartridges recycling appeal is an easy way to recycle your
cartridges which will generate much needed funds for the important work
the Michael Sobell House does whilst also helping to protect the
environment. Please support the appeal by recycling your old inkjet
cartridges and encouraging your friends, family and colleagues to do the
same.
