Volunteering Opportunities at MVCC

Set Day Refreshments Volunteer
3 – 4 hours per week

You will play an important role welcoming patients and helping with refreshments and queries from the volunteer hub while patients wait for their appointment.

You will help improve the experience of patients and family members by volunteering at a set day and time each week. For many this will be a stressful time as they wait for their appointment. With a friendly manner you will:

·     Welcome and support patients and family members with directions, information requests, questions or concerns

·     Prepare the tea trolley and offer refreshments to those waiting, taking the time to assist and signpost patients to our support and information services as necessary

·  Escalate any issues that you cannot deal with to the appropriate member of staff

·     Maintain infection control practices

·     Help us measure our impact by recording all interactions

This role will suit you if you are confident communicator and able to commit to a regular day and time to help deliver a reliable service across the week. Uniform and training provided.

Response Volunteer
3 – 4 hours per week

As one of our fantastic team of Response Volunteers you will ensure help is available to teams across the cancer centre where it is needed most.

You will be willing and able to carry out a wide range of tasks to best meet the needs of patients and staff at MVCC at any given time. These include patient facing, telephone and administrative tasks.

Examples of the type of support you will be able to provide include:

· Welcoming patients to MVCC and signposting patients to the right part of the hospital for their appointment

· Providing support and information to patients and signposting on to the best team to meet their needs

· Collecting valuable feedback from patients and carers using different survey methods (face to face or via telephone)

· Re-stocking patient information and putting up posters around site

· Running items between wards & departments

· Preparing patient information packs

· Basic administration eg data input, scanning, photocopying

· Supporting staff at departments across the Cancer Centre

This role will suit you if you are flexible and able to pay attention to detail for some tasks. This role will also suit you if you cannot commit to a regular day or time to volunteer. Uniform and training will be provided.

RS Drop-in Volunteer – Lynda Jackson Cancer Support & Information Services
3 – 4 hours per week

As a Resource Support (RS) you will play a key role as part of the Support & Information team engaging with visitors to our drop-in at the centre.

The Lynda Jackson centre provides a calm, non-clinical environment where patients and carers can receive additional information and support, including emotional support. You will be provided with full training and you will:
·     Help create an atmosphere where visitors feel safe to share.

·     Alongside the health care professional, you will help to provide a warm welcome, using your active listening skills to support patients and carers in the drop-in, signpost them to support services, help answer the helpline, make bookings for complementary therapy and referrals to counselling services.

·     Each shift will vary, and you may be asked to adapt each shift to the needs for the shift that day.

This role will suit you if you are an excellent, compassionate listener. You will be provided with a uniform and will need to adhere to infection prevention and control measures on shift.

Gardening Volunteer

This is an opportunity to help maintain the wonderful gardens and outdoor spaces at MVCC.

Working as part of a team our volunteer gardeners help with the upkeep, development and protection of the gardens at MVCC so that it can be enjoyed by all patients, families and visitors.
