Eastbury Horticultural Society
During the early 70s, a group of budding gardeners in the Eastbury part of Northwood felt that the gardens in the area were such a valuable contribution to the quality of life for its residents, that a local horticultural society should be created. In 1971 the Eastbury Horticultural Society germinated; it grew well, expanding to enable residents in other parts of Northwood to join. It now has approximately 110 members.
A small committee ensures that members have plenty of engagements to put in their diaries for every season. During autumn and winter we usually host 5 or 6 speakers, who cover a wide range of subjects. Meetings take place at Eastbury Farm School, starting at 8pm and preceded by tea and biscuits.
The arrival of Spring sees the start of activities such as day outings to gardens, both private and charitably owned (National Trust, etc.). Events organized by the society also include ‘Bring and Buy’ plant sales, one in the spring and one in the autumn, where plants grown by members are sold. These sales top-up our finances and, once coffee and cakes are served, become happy social occasions! Most members quite understandably enjoy sharing their experiences and efforts with others and viewing hosts’ own gardens. We have one or two ‘Open Gardens’ every year and they too are popular.
Our Annual Show is staged at Eastbury Farm School in either early Summer or Autumn. We are not professionals so all members are encouraged to submit entries!
Members are kept up-to-date with all our activities mainly through email, supplemented by physical letter for those who do not have such a facility.
We are always pleased to hear from local residents who wish to become members. The annual subscription for the current year is £7. Please email the Membership Secretary to request joining details: ehs.members@gmail.com

It is an entertaining evening with many anecdotes and useful gardening tips, so if you are green-fingered and love flowers, it’s just the place to come, and bring a friend along. Tea and coffee are served in the interval when you will have an opportunity to chat and make friends and, at the end of the demonstration, the arrangements are raffled, so you may go home with a beautiful flower arrangement into the bargain!

Watford Recycling Arts Project
Usually known as WRAP this is a registered charity and a member of the Reuseful UK national network of scrapstores. In October 2015 WRAP moved to Units 2-6 Ryefield Crescent behind Northwood Hills station. Here you will find the random collection of commercial and industrial bi-product donations that over 4,000 schools, small groups and families have discovered in WRAP’s 20 year history.
WRAP is run almost entirely by volunteers, a loyal bunch who turn out week after week to prepare the pick-ups and brought-in donations for presentation. For an annual membership fee WRAP offers its members a more or less unlimited supply of materials – foam, cardboard, fabric, tiles, leather off-cuts to name a few, and also run site-specific and theme-based workshops for groups, which can be booked on application. Items made by volunteers and members are displayed throughout the building to give inspiration, and volunteers pride themselves on being able to root out suitable materials for proposed makes. When going to WRAP it is always best to arrive with an idea rather than a shopping list, as what is available may not always be an obvious fit but can sometimes be a better one!
Do get in touch if you have any queries or have items to offer for donation. Donations are vetted and volunteers may turn down items they are not permitted to store or know will not be used readily. Keep an eye on the website for up-to-date details. Come and visit; we may be what you are looking for!
