On Wednesday, 28th July, the new Youth Centre in Hallowell Road was opened by Cllr David Simmonds, Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services. Our MP, Nick Hurd congratulated all those involved in the construction of the centre, adding that “it is a good space and I hope it is fully used”. Councillors Carol Melvin, Richard Lewis and Ray Graham, Council officials and representatives of the local police were also in attendance.
The Centre is a redevelopment of the old Boys’ Club which was established in 1913 and several of the older guests had connections with the Club dating back to the 1930s. It is well equipped with computers, the latest electronic games, sound equipment, a band practice area, table tennis facilites and a dance studio. There is also a lounge area where youngsters can chat and take refreshments from the kitchen. The facility caters for young people aged from 12 to 25 and separate sessions are held that are appropriate for each age group.
We hope that most of Northwood’s young people will use the facilities and make it a resounding success.
