If you travel within the EU you are covered for emergency medical care (to a varying degree) by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
Travellers can obtain this free as either a physical card or as an electronic version they can display on their smartphone. However, many local groups are being advised by the Metropolitan Police to ensure that people log on to the correct website rather than one that wants to charge you a hefty fee for something that is actually free.
One site that is perfectly safe is NHS Choices and on their website you merely have to follow a simple online process. Click here to visit their site.
Don’t forget to check the expiry date of your card before you travel – the EHIC is valid for up to five years. You can renew an EHIC up to six months before the expiry date.
