Hillingdon Council has won the prestigious Green Flag award for 42 of its green spaces, eight new ones being added this year. Amongst the winners is Northwood Recreation Ground in Chestnut Avenue where a Flag Hoisting ceremony took place today.
The ceremony was performed by Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr John Hensley accompanied by his wife, Diane Hensley, the Mayoress. Also present were Northwood Councillors Carol Melvin and Richard Lewis along with members of LBH Greenspaces team.
Parks and green spaces are judged in April and May each year and the winners are announced in July. Parks must apply each year to keep their Green Flag Award, and winning sites are eligible to fly a Green Flag in the park for a year.
Sites for a Green Flag Award are judged against eight key criteria:
- a welcoming place
- healthy, safe and secure
- clean and well maintained
- sustainability
- conservation and heritage
- community involvement
- marketing
- management
