Northwood Gravel Pits Awarded Green Flag

Posted on

Hillingdon Council has won the prestigious Green Flag award for 47 of its green spaces, five new ones being added this year. Amongst the winners is the Northwood Gravel Pits area where a Flag Hoisting ceremony took place today.

The ceremony was performed by Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr Carol Melvin accompanied by her husband and Consort, Andrew. Also present were Northwood Councillor Richard Lewis along with members of LBH Greenspaces team and Cllr Jonathan Bianco, Cabinet Member for Finance, Property and Business Services. A number of the NRA executive committee were there too.

Parks and green spaces are judged in April and May each year and the winners are announced in July. Parks must apply each year to keep their Green Flag Award, and winning sites are eligible to fly a Green Flag in the park for a year.

Sites for a Green Flag Award are judged against eight key criteria:

    a welcoming place
    healthy, safe and secure
    clean and well maintained
    sustainability
    conservation and heritage
    community involvement
    marketing
    management
